In A New History of Classical Rhetoric, George Kennedy talks about classical rhetoric from Greek Literature to the middle ages. The term rhetoric “denotes the civic art of public speaking as it developed in deliberative assemblies, law courts, and other formal occasions under constitutional government” (Kennedy 3). In classical view, rhetoric has been living in our life with natural instinct; however, philosophers, educators, and religious leaders has discovered more affective and exquisite rhetoric as rhetoric came to focus.

The second sophistic started to engage in the orator, and they were interested in artistic rhetoric. Also, they were more conservative, and they pursued the old religion and old value as opposed to radical older sophist. Therefore, the second sophist tended to be Christianized. They used oratory to explain philosophy, so rhetoric become major and prevalent in this period. Also, second sophist taught in schools of declamation. During this time, school focused on the style and artistic aspects of rhetoric such as grammar. However, there are some evidences that Christianity was also closely related to rhetoric. Christianity were synthesized within rhetoric and still prevalent even though there were many other doctrines which are mystical even magical emerged. Kennedy stated that “it is also the period in which Christianity, despite persecution, greatly advanced the construction of a systematic theology” (242). However, when the emperor Constantine issued the Edict of Milan, a teacher of rhetoric had to give up his school if he becomes Christian due to extended religious toleration to Christian. This shows that the school which taught rhetoric has a close relationship with religion.
The most interesting chapter in A New History of Classical Rhetoric, George Kennedy is Chapter 12, Christianity and Classical Rhetoric. Christian thinks Rhetoric as worldly. Kennedy used example of first Corinthian “My speech and my proclamation are not in persuasive world of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and power, in order that your faith may not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God”.
