1. I think the result I found most surprising was the fill-in, “And he gave ___ written word ‘skunk’…” The correct answer was “the.” Even though 77 students gave the correct response, there were still several who used random words such as “garbage,” “things,” and “fishy.” These words do not even come close to fitting the sentence being that they are all form class words. A second point of interest is the fact that no one was able to come up with the correct word for “prolific.” That is the only entry that no one was able to correctly identify.
2. There is more agreement among the structure class words such as “to,” “of,” “that,” and “and.” These are words that helped keep the flow of the sentence. I feel that I had an easier time picking out these words because there are no variations. Form class words have so many synonyms, whereas structure words like “to,” have one, identifiable meaning.

Most of the blanks containing form class words would be difficult for nonnative speakers. I say this with certainty because I am a fluent English speaker and I had trouble filling some of the blanks. Parts of the word guess game like, “…changing the spelling of ‘[tongue]’ to ‘tung’ and…” would be especially hard for nonnative speakers. Because spellings found in English can be particularly tricky, the speaker might not understand how to fill in the blank. These form class words also can undergo changes in form and are open-ended. Because of the ambiguity of a lot of form class words, the true meaning could prove difficult to

Unlike the third-grade assessment that contained skills on the lower level of the grade, the fourth-grade questions were written at a fourth-grade level. We began with the phonics assessment first. Unluckily, S’niya started off already answering the first two questions wrong. One of the questions was “Most of the farmers here grow corn, soybeans, and ____” to which she answered “greet” instead of “wheat”. By the end of the assessment, S’niya answered five out of the ten questions correct, with a percent of 50%.…

The 4-hour block group lesson presentation went ok. I believe that the message was received, even though few things didn’t go the way I wanted them to go. The strengths of the lesson were probably when everyone understood how the program works and its pros and cons. Instead the areas that needed improvement were, the icebreaker, it wasn’t supposed to be assigned a letter, but anyone had to keep going with the alphabet being careful to not repeat the letter, but my partner forgot about it. Then, the grammar wall, maybe needed to be easier, less words and still sending the same message.…

Breaking the Barrier Between Classes Throughout time and our own lives we have witnessed the negative social consequences due to class inequality. Financial situations should not define a person and yet, being the critical humans we are, this usually ends up in contributing to our overall thoughts of others. If we allowed ourselves to disregard this and think of people based on their qualities and personality in spite of everything else, maybe we would create more positive relationships. In the book Ghost by Jason Reynolds, the author sheds light onto social classes by using the character’s experiences to connect and bond people together despite of their economic status and differences.…

Erik Olin Wright clearly states that there are two main kinds of class locations: Basic class locations (bourgeoisie and proletariat) and contradictory class location (middle class workers). A big company like Sears involves these two kinds of class locations. It is made up of a CEO (who owns the means of production) and its lower class workers (who maintains the flow of the capital) these are the custodians and the sales associates. These workers are not required to have a high set of knowledge but the company will not function without them.…

The first thing I ever wrote for Noah Gordon’s class was a description of a rather mundane object: the fringe around a white-board. Upon looking back at it, I immediately saw how much my writing has matured and changed over the past year of class. In terms of vocabulary, literary phrasing and structure (flow), and grammar; I am leaps and bonds ahead of how I wrote in the earlier part of the year. This being said, I think I have managed to keep my personal flavors in the writing. Here’s an excerpt from the first piece of writing I did, that I believe proves this point pretty well: “Let’s start with a color.…
