Adrienne Rich’s essay “ Claiming an Education” she explains how important it is to push yourself no matter what sex you are and that you have to take responsibility for what you do and not sell yourself short. Rich says “[r]esponsibility to yourself means that you don’t fall for shallow and easy solutions, taking “gut” courses instead of ones you know will challenge you, bluffing at school and life instead of doing solid work, marrying early as an escape from real decisions, getting pregnant as an invasion of already existing problems” (Rich 610). This means that people are always having excuses in the process to take the easy way out of life instead about continuing their college degree. The same thing happened to Susan Straight while she was going to school. She took charge of her education and while she took charge of it she saw how her classmates where living the hard life. Students are devolving the power to take control over their college education and never give up. Students are taking control over their education to better themselves and have a better future in their lives. Paulo Freire “Pedagogy of The Oppressed” emphasizes the aspect that the way to gain knowledge about how the world is at that present moment is that “they come to see the world not as a static reality, but as a reality in process, in transformation” (Freire 83). He means that the world is evolving and students do not know how to react to the evolving world.
