In the painting of Miss Columbia’s School House we can interpret many ideas. We can understand that in the painting the kids represent a country of the world giving each kid a certain characteristic. The nursery has an American flag demonstrating that America is strong and is teaching the world. The children or the countries that are being represented by these children are shown to be interested by Miss Columbia and the school house and because it’s an American school house they are learning the American way.…

Constructing Place Distinction In what follows I document permanent residents’ and second homeowners’ parallel construction of place distinction. Both groups tend to agree on what lends meaning to Rangeley; both call upon the rural idyll—that rural life is simple, virtuous, and different from urban life—to explain what makes Rangeley distinct (Woods, 2011). While this, itself, is not particularly surprising, given the enduring narratives of rural life (Williams 1974; Hummon, 1990; Bell, 1994; Woods, 2005, 2011), what is of particular interest is how both view second homeowners—who are not, themselves, rural—not as a problematic exogenous force, but as a marker of what makes Rangeley distinct and as assurance of its worth. Both groups celebrate…

The stereotypes of the all-American family in the 1950s were represented by the Clutter family in the novel. Capote made the family as ideal as they can get, such as Herbert being the “widely known citizen” and the dominant man of the house, Bonnie being the “nervous” and frail housewife, Nancy being the “town darling,” and Kenyon being the studious and industrious child (Capote 6-7). They symbolized the perfect family of the 1950s and were well-educated and financially stable. However, they were such an ideal family that most would never have imagined a massacre upon them. Moreover, Capote’s representation of them as the stereotypical family proved to show how back then most people were just as optimistic about the future like the Clutter…

Explain the irony of John Wright's name and the way he died. John Wright was not “right”, at least for Minnie Wright. He used to emotionally torture her, abuse her, and isolate her from her loved ones. He was a cruel man who killed her favorite bird by breaking its neck. Ironically, he died the same way, by being strangled.…

Rathdrum, Idaho Where you are from does not define who you are, but it does shape you into the person you are today. So if you were to ask me where I was from I would gladly tell you I am from Rathdrum, Idaho. Rathdrum has been the only place I have ever really known; growing up and being raised here I never have had the appreciation for where I lived.…

Noke and Lis lived in a beautiful home with three spacious bedrooms, a large bathroom with a tub and shower, Ellen and I had never seen a bathtub before and looked forward to taking leisurely, long soaks covered in bubbles, a sizable living room with a wood burning fireplace, a bright kitchen with a breakfast nook and a mudroom. Oma beamed with motherly pride that her son owned such a fantastic home. Noke and Lis occupied the master bedroom with an additional en-suite bathroom, Uncle Kité and Nini used the bedroom down the hall and in a bonus room leading off the living room, Uncle Leo and Netty settled into a cozy space of their own. At the end of the driveway was a makeshift, wooden cabin-like structure, which Chris made-do as his temporary home. Tucked away on the property, between the main house and the cabin, was a studio guest house; a spacious square single room with three windows and a door.…

What meanings do permanent residents and second homeowners construct and ascribe to Rangeley? Both groups of actors rely on similar narratives of the rural idyll to construct Rangeley’s place distinction—they imagine it to be safe, isolated, and removed from the problems associated with the rest of the world. This narrative itself is not unique to rural places; in fact, this narrative has been one of the most enduring narratives of rurality (Williams 1974; Woods 2011). However, what is unique is the ways in which both groups situate second homeowners as constitute of Rangeley’s distinction. Both groups celebrate the value second homeowners lend to Rangeley and acknowledge how they in part help to uphold the rural idyll.…
