Southern states hated this idea because they felt as if the North was trying to take over their rights and eventually abolish slavery altogether. The Republican Party, heavily populated by the North, had the majority of the electoral votes. On November 06, 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected the first Republican president. Before his inauguration, seven slave states seceded and formed the Confederacy. With these seven states gone, there were only eight remaining slave states. They chose not participate in the secession. The Republican Party did not accept the act of secession and made it illegal. During Lincoln’s inaugural speech he stated he would not start a Civil War. "I have no purpose, directly or indirectly to interfere with the institution of slavery in the United States where it exists. With the increase of demand, new technology such as making steel and developing coal to replace charcoal soon emerged. Steamboats and railroads were made to make transporting large shipments of cargo easy. The North was earning capital and investors were always looking for new industrial activates they could invest in.
