According to Irish author Oscar Wilde “Disobedience, in the eyes of anyone who has read history, is man’s original virtue. It is through disobedience that progress has been made, through disobedience and through rebellion.” In all aspects of history, there has been disobedience. The definition of disobedience is the “failure or refusal to obey rules.” Disobedience has a negative connotation but in most major cases without disobedience progression would never have been possible. Disobedience is a necessary human trait for progression. It is human nature to want to go against authority. The colonist went to the new lands and established a whole new way of life. Then they didn’t agree with all the laws that were being put in place, such as the Sugar Act, Stamp Act, and other taxes. Through not paying and trying to repeal those taxes they were identifying an issue they faced and the only way they could have gotten out of that situation was through disobedience. America chose to go against what was being forced and rebelled starting the American revolution literally encompassing the very idea of disobedience. In other cases that pertain to America’s progression through disobedience would be the fight for the equal rights pertaining woman. For years woman were fighting social-norms to gain simple rights. Women and men showed disobedience by making speeches, signing petitions, marching in parades and arguing that women deserve all of the rights of being an American.
