Mrs. Emery’s Kindergarten Class For my civic engagement project I went to Mrs. Emery’s kindergarten class. I was met with different obstacles when I first arrived from keeping little boys out of the girls bathroom to one child spitting on another. I had an interesting experience within a ten hour span. It opened my eyes to what it is like to be a teacher of such young children, with such different personalities. Before I went to Mrs. Emery’s classroom and worked with younger children, I had no idea what it was going to be like. I had imagined a small classroom, like when I was in kindergarten, that had a small bathroom in the corner and sitting at their assigned table just listening to Mrs. Emery. Boy, was I wrong. The first day I walked in children were running everywhere, a student teacher was helping one little boy read in the corner, and Mrs. Emery was trying to get the class’s attention. As I stepped into the corner away from the commotion, Mrs. Emery flickered her lights and sang a song while pointing to a mat on the floor surrounded by books.
