City Year exists as an education-focused nonprofit established in 1988 in Boston Massachusetts by Michael Brown and Alan Khazei. What City Year does is become partners with various public schools in order to help keep the students enrolled in attendance and on track to graduate. A team of young AmeriCorps members are brought together to commit an entire year of full-time service to these schools. AmeriCorps members focus on a few important key things while servicing the schools: they support the students by focusing on attendance, behavior, and academic performance through in-class tutoring, mentoring, and after-school programs.

• Founders held very unique views that young people in service could be a powerful resource for addressing some of America’s most pressing issues.
• Built by Brown and Khazei with the belief that each one of us (individuals) have the power to make a difference in the world.

• Increase graduation rates across the country, and making an impact in the lives of the students they serve.
• Holistic approach based around a group od carefully selected, highly trained young adults—AmeriCorps member—who provide individualized support to at-risk students.
• Identify most at-risk for drop out students using approach based on research from John Hopkins University. Early warning indicators called ABCs (poor attendance, disruptive behavior, and course failure in math and English).
City Year Impact
• In one year of less, City Year helped reduce by half the number of at-risk students: a 54% reduction in the number of students off-track in English Language Arts and a 46% reduction in the number of students off-track in Math.
• Students gained an additional 22,000 hours of instruction due to City Year’s attendance programs.
• Students working with City Year on literacy or math demonstrated a growth rate that was 1.4 times greater than the national average for students at their proficiency
