Churchill sees one of the great threats to common people as war. After two World Wars most of Europe agreed. He also says that tyranny or lack of rights is a threat to the people. The Soviet Union and Nazi Germany were notorious for their tyrannical human rights abuses. I believe that Churchill is specifically referring to these two states. It was also the most populous, rich, and powerful democratic nation. World War 2 created the conditions for American hegemony. Perhaps Churchill is already realizing that the days of a worldwide United Kingdom are fading. The United States industrial output is impressive and was essential to the Marshall plan. The United States also was important in ensuring Britain was an important victor who could make demands. With no American involvement it is likely more nations would have become soviet states. Churchill also wants all the English speaking nations of the world to come together, forming a great alliance. Without the United States this would pretty much just be the Commonwealth. One must wonder if he would concede so much power to United States in more favorable conditions. Europe was devastated by the war. America remained powerful and rarely touched on the home front. Geography helped America become the most powerful nation after World War 2. I think that if Britain had been effectively able to defend themselves and the rest of Europe from an outbreak of war sooner that they would have retained a larger share of their power. In my opinion, World War 2 killed the British and German Empires. What we got afterwards was the United Kingdom and
