Chumbak Case Study

We have decided to base our project on expansion possibilities of brand ‘Chumbak’ in

Dehradun which is a tier two city in the state of Uttarakhand. Chumbak was founded in 2010

as an idea for creating a range of fun souvenirs for India and Indians. It started with souvenirs

stocked in multi brand outlets and with the success the company opened pop up stores

throughout the country along with an online store. The latest strategy of the company is to

open up flagship stores which will have various product lines that the company has to offer.

Chumbak started with an initial investment of Rupees forty five lacks and since then has

raised money from Matrix Partners and SeedFund.

Quirky/kitsch products in the Indian retail industry shows a lot of promise and this potential

is seconded by the amount of investment that Venture Capitalists are making in the

companies that are showing signs of acceptability in the market. Brands like Happily

Unmarried, Indian Circus etc. which are also creating quirky products are getting funding

from investment companies.

Chumbak as a design oriented lifestyle brand has been accepted well by the audience in both

tier one and two cities but due to the small size of the pop up stores they were unable to

provide different product lines that they wanted to. In order to increase the availability of

product lines and deeper assortment, the company has started working on the strategy of

opening flagship stores in the cities where its pop up stores are successful. Also the company

has realized that people are accepting the quirky products in tier two cities since the

consumers had no option of this sort of products earlier. Design is becoming more important

Regional offices of Genpact, Spice Digital, Serco, IMSI, Spanco, Aptara,

IndiaMART are present in Dehradun. A number of manufacturing units are present in the

Selaqui area. The construction of the Delhi-Dehradun four-lane highway will enable more

economic development.

Dehradun is also known for being a center for national defence production. Major defence

production establishments include the Ordnance Factory Dehradun, the Opto Electronics

Factory of the Ordnance Factories Board, Defence Electronics Application Laboratory and

Instruments Research and Development Establishment of the Defence Research and

Development Organisation which manufactures products for the Indian Armed Forces. Many

of these are located in Raipur area. The Ordnance Factory estate is located in the middle of

mountains. Dulhani River flows in the heart of the colony. Dehradun, also known as "City of

Schools" and "School Capital of India", is home to some of India's renowned educational

institutions. Apart from this Dehradun also has food processing industry, pharmaceutical
