Steinbeck is one of many author that uses imagery for their story, in “The Chrysanthemums” the theme of the story was uses through imagery and symbolism. His imagery reinforces his theme of loneliness and confinement in the story. In “The Chrysanthemums”, the valley was surrounded by mountains and fog, which describe as if she was living inside of the pot. The house that Elisa lives in is surrounded by fences and the flower chrysanthemums is also surrounded by fence inside the fence.…
Today, sex is a much talked about subject, and roughly half of high school students participate in the act. Today the value of ‘saving one’s self for marriage’ is dated and carried out by few, but in ‘The Chrysanthemums’ by John Steinbeck, this ideal is presented to an extreme. Steinbeck begins the story by painting a descriptive picture of the Salinas Valley and describes it as “a time of quiet and waiting”. The story then introduces us to two of the main characters, Elisa and her husband, whose first interaction can best be described as awkward and curt . When her husband leaves, a tinker drives up to Elisas’ estate.…
In his nostalgic poem “Blackberries”, Yusef Komunyakka allows the reader to better connect with the speaker’s problems by the use of first person point of view. By allowing the young boy to express his stream of conscious directly to those listening to the poem, we get an intimate glimpse at his transition from innocence. The poem begins with the boy recalling his time spent picking wild blackberries. He enjoys this act, and how it leaves his hands stained “like a printers/Or a thief’s before a police blotter”.…
The City of Waknuk and it’s Intolerance towards Deviations - The Chrysalids Waknuk is a very intolerant society that does not approve of people who do not fit in with the Nicholson’s Repentances rules. In the novel The Chrysalids by John Wyndham, it is proven that Waknuk is a prejudice society and, it’s people are very faithful to God just because they are afraid of him causing another Tribulation. Citizens of Waknuk strongly dislike Blasphemies and Offences because, they think that the Deviations are the reason that Tribulation is being caused. Wyndham provides many examples from the novel that proves the intolerance of Waknuk and how it’s citizens discriminate all of the deviations.…
Each individual in the world has unique tendencies, passions, and emotions. All of which can be expressed or tied to a specific object. Whether the feelings are negative or positive, they can vary in intensity. The dog in “My Kids Dog” and the chrysanthemums in the story “The Chrysanthemums” both represent strong emotions expressed by the protagonists.…
Sophie Wender is a significant character in The Chrysalids as she is used to introduce the concept of mutations into the story. This purpose alone would explain her significance, but her growth also communicates some of the themes in the story. At first, Sophie strikes the appearance of a fearing, curious and obedient child. She is in her own chrysalid, so to speak. As she comes to age, her transformation develops her convictions as well as it does to change her behaviour.…
Children give adults a refreshing view on the world. Authors often reflect upon the rolls of children the world. James Hurst masterfully highlights the extraordinary joy and the spontaneity that children can bring into people’s lives. For example, Doodle, one of the main characters in James Hurst’s “The Scarlet Ibis”, is an invalid boy when he is first born, but as he develops he overcomes many of the challenges put in his way. Although Doodle has many physical limitations compared to the average boy his age, he does not allow his disabilities define who he is.…
Shift of Innocence The mind of a young child is nearly unfathomable. To attempt to delve into its depths is, typically, a fool’s errand; and yet, somehow, certain authors manage to reach back through the years and call to mind old memories. They are able to spin stories from these dream-recollections.…

The shorty story “The Chrysanthemums” by John Steinbeck, deals with a person who is at odds with an unjust society. The story is about Elisa Allen who is unsatisfied with current life. Elisa’s frustration stems from not having a child and that her husband fails to appreciate her passionately as a woman (Kennedy). To ease her frustration, Elisa nurtures flowers in her garden where she grows chrysanthemums. The chrysanthemums are Steinbeck’s symbol for Elisa’s inner self and the inner self of every woman (Kassim).…
While visiting the hallways of the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego, one work of art by Jennifer Steinkamp stood out greatly. One projector and a small computer in a dark room presented a work of art on a white wall: Flowers. The piece of art itself was a computer generated video of flowers that endlessly swayed side to side. However, it was not the projected content that intrigued me, but the medium of the work instead. I glanced at the computer, and my mind was filled with a multitude of questions.…
In the play “A Raisin in the Sun” the author, Lorraine Hansberry, has incorporated examples of all 3 I’s of oppression. The three I’s of oppression are interpersonal, institutional, and internalized. Institutional oppression happens when one group has more power than another group and our institutions (government, schools, media..) favor the more powerful group. One example of institutional oppression in the play was when the organization tried to tell them that they couldn’t live there because they were black. On page 140 it says, “ As I say, that for the happiness of all concerned that our Negro families are happier when they live in their own communities”.…

This book showed how from one thing many responsibilities can come from it. The book If you give a mouse a cookie can show in a more illustrative way to young children how responsibility can change everything. The way that it gives this ‘lesson’ through a fiction mouse that could talk makes it more interesting for a child to understand. The language and structure of the book is perfect for a child to interpret the…
