Chromatography Abstract: The purpose of this lab is to use chromatography to separate and purify organic compounds. There are many different types of chromatography but most depend on the principle of adsorption. The two important components of chromatography are the adsorbent and the eluent. Adsorbents are usually solid materials that will attract and adsorb the materials to be separated. The eluent is the solvent, which carries the materials to be separated through the adsorbent. After being separated we can calculate the Rate of flow, which is generally known as Rate Values, meaning the distance traveled along the chromatography paper. Each color has its own rate of flow so having a rate of flow can help identify the color easier.

Introduction: Chromatography is one of the useful methods of separating and purifying organic compounds. CHromatography works on the concept that the compounds to be separated are slightly soluble in the eluent and will spend some of the time in the eluent (or solvent) and some of the time on the adsorbent. In order for our group to examine six types of dye, we did not have enough time for yellow dye in the strip to develop. This factor limited our correct result for yellow strip.

Conclusion: In conclusion, the chromatography lab is a basic lab where you separate the food dyes using chromatography. Its very simple to achieve and helpful as you can determine the behaviors of different food dyes and how they differ. This can be useful as you can observe the colors to identify a solvent that will give maximum resolution of mixture of dyes. In our lab we used 2% Isopropyl Alcohol Solution to get the maximum resolution of mixture of dyes. When we have the maximum resolution of mixture of dyes the results are more accurate to record the data and get average rate of
