The time period when this event took place was 1400’s through 1500’s when Christopher Columbus set sail to find a shorter route to Asia. Now before before Christopher Columbus had this idea he was just a normal boy like you and me. Christopher Columbus was born on October 31, 1451 in the Republic of Genoa, Italy. He was the son of a weaver and loved sailing. Columbus’s first went to sea when he was a teenager participating in many trading voyages in the Mediterranean and Aegean seas. One voyage to the island of Khios, in modern day Greece, brought him the closest we would even come to Asia. When he was older Columbus would participate in several voyages to Africa and gain more knowledge about the seas and oceans, mainly the Atlantic ocean and its currents. Muslim domination of the trade routes made traveling to India and China very difficult for them. Columbus, believing that sailing through the Atlantic would be quicker and safer, devised a plan to sail west the reach the east. In this plan of his he estimated the earth to be a sphere approximately 63% its actual size and its distance between the Canary Islands and Japan to be about 2,300 miles. Many sailing experts disagreed with him and said that the second century BC estimate of the earth’s circumference at 25,000 miles.
