The History of Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus was born in southern Europe in 1451. He was very religious, and fixated on gaining support on his plan to sail west across the Atlantic Ocean. Columbus was an experienced sailor and day-by-day he became more convinced that his idea was possible. The plan was to start from the west, and travel all the way to the east side, because like many other Europeans of his time, Columbus believed the that the Earth was a sphere and that theoretically it was possible to reach the East Indies by sailing west. In January of 1486, Columbus’s plan was rejected with his first audience, the monarchs. He didn’t stop after that, …show more content…
He gradually made his way to Lisbon, where he received maps, and information about the Atlantic. He was becoming “obsessed with a scheme to prove he was right.” Not making much luck in Portugal, Spain, England or France, Columbus finally got financing for his voyage from the Spanish Monarchs: Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand. They saw his plan as, “an expensive gamble.” Only six weeks, after leaving the Canary Islands, he reached land within the Caribbean, north of the eastern part of Cuba. He placed ownership on it, and named it San Salvador, in honor of Jesus Christ. Islanders were called “Indians” by Christopher, because he assumed they occupied the East Indies somewhere beside Japan or China. However, the islanders called themselves Tainos, (in their language this meant “good” or “noble.”) Tainos grew cassava, corn, cotton, tobacco, and other crops. Noticing the difference in clothing, and religious matters, Columbus once stated that the Tainos were, “A people very poor in everything.” With a voyage that had lasted almost eight months, Columbus made Spain a serious threat to Portugal, who haven’t sailed to India or China. The news of Columbus’ voyage, had spread quickly. The Spanish monarchs went to the pope for support, to claim the new lands discovered in the West. He agreed, but this made the Portuguese fearful of their discovered territories being in jeopardy. All this commotion caused the Treaty of Tordesillas

Even more important to him than new discoveries was his strong desire, to spread Christianity to different parts of the world. This was the real purpose for his trip across the Atlantic.
