Question 1: How is Columbus a hero according to his journal? His journal shows that he did indeed come to the Americas, but he never set foot in North America on record. When he arrived in the Bahamas, he wrote about the people of the island and he said, “it appears to me, that the people are ingenious, and would be good servants and I am of opinion that they would very readily become Christians, as they appear to have no religion.” (Columbus, 12, October). This shows one side of him that he might be able to use these people for his own gain. …show more content…
However, according to his own journal, the people of the island, “should be good servants.” (Columbus). I’m not sure whether having servants for your people is what he sees as good in this situation or not, but I believe that having a servant is like keeping someone captive in such a sense that someone keeps a slave. Heroes also would not take a nursing child from their mother and throw them into water. To make matters worse, they referred to the children as “offspring of the devil” (Las Casas).
Question 3: What was said by Kirkpatrick Sale that could be considered valid? Why? Mr. Sale pointed out that Columbus’ life goal was to get away from any previous life and find life in a new place. I can understand this on a personal level and a logical level. Kirkpatrick also stated that the Taino lived in harmony with other living beings for most of the time that they occupied the land. Something that Columbus took and threw away as if it was the worst idea ever. All because it didn’t benefit him or Christians in any other way.
Question 4: what did Kirkpatrick write that is invalid or exaggerated?
