The Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Chorus presented a beautiful concert called Christmas Pops. The concert had sing-along carols to sacred choruses, this is a must see concert for anyone wanting to enjoy the perfect holiday season music. Throughout the concert, pieces from different musical eras were played from baroque period to the classical period to present day. By being able to hear multiple pieces from different eras all combined into one concert was an amazing experience just because I was able to see how music has impacted the world throughout the decades. Music is one of the most unique performing arts due to the way it has evolved. Styles and melodies considered unfit in one era are displayed prominently in another. This concert …show more content…
This could be, because of how Handel wrote the piece. In the Hallelujah Chorus, we hear shifting textures in which the voices and text overlap and then come together to clearly declaim the text.114 Handel’s extraordinary ability to combine tuneful melodies and intriguing textures with striking homorhythmic passages is most evident in the beloved chorus.115 Until I heard this piece live, I never really understood how the writing style and words could be so impacting but this piece displays that. On the other hand, when I heard “Waltz of the Flower,” it was a very energetic piece. As soon as the piece started, it automatically brought Christmas to my mind. The uplifting and dynamic melody kept me intrigued with the performance the whole time. Even though both of these performances left lasting impressions, they did it in different ways; one with words and one with the style; this is just another one of the ways that the composers from the baroque era differed with the classical era.

The timbre changes through out the show, but in the portion where they sung hallelujah the timbre was very bright with high and low harmony’s mixed together. Handel’s Messiah was constructed into 3 parts, part 1 being in accordance with Christmas, part 2 with Easter, and part 3 with the end of all time. Through out all of the scenes the lines in the songs correspond with verses from the bible. For example, in part 1 scene 3 “Behold, a virgin shall conceive” comes directly from the bible verses Isaiah 7:14 and Matthew 1:23. Often when referring to Christmas, people think of Christmas trees, Santa Clause, and presents, but this lyric reminds us of the conception of Jesus Christ and his purpose for being brought into the world.…

Holidays, in addition to being a festive time for celebrating with friends and family, is also a time to enjoy classic fine arts together. A stable every Christmas season is the Nutcracker, which the literature is republished in multiple forms including play, dance, and orchestra concerts. This season I had the pleasure of being a audience of The Nutcracker presented at the McCaw Hall. The show was phenomenal, and included moments of cheerfulness and happiness, but during others moments of grave danger and suspense. The performers applied contrasting bodily techniques and motions to express different emotions, and wrapped up the scene with appropriate props and decors that awed the audience ever time the stage came to light.…

John Legend, singer, songwriter, pianist, is a 36 year old extremely talented man who has succeeded in far more than just reaching fame in music. He comes from an interesting historical background; his 4th and 5th grandfathers were born slaves and died freed men. Being that John Legend was always into Classical soul, hip-hop and gospel music since early childhood, he carried that interest into the music he composes today, which makes him one of the few artists in the r&b/hip-hop music industry today that has carried his soul music history into today’s modern musical styles. John Legend’s early childhood, early career and musical influences have influenced his reputation and our musical heritage today by combining old with new and making it something of his own through his music.…

Milton Babbitt has been both a controversial composer, as well as author. In his article, “Who Cares if You Listen?” , Babbitt is quite harsh on his thoughts of contemporary music and performance as a whole. Babbitt discusses why contemporary composers, who produce “serious” and “advanced” pieces, should stop allowing their music to become accessible to the public. Instead, Babbitt calls for a restriction on their compositions and performances.…

Upon attending the International Chamber Music Festival Concert, a certain ecstatic vibe could be felt as the performers walked on stage with their musical instruments. The virtuoso’s performed in pieces that contained trios, duets, and quintets; showing the concentration they required when listening to each other. When working on Chamber Music, much of the melody jumps around from instrument to instrument, show casing various solos and much of the instruments having to coincide with each other to carefully listen for the melody. The first performance, was from Mosaics, by Eric Ewazen, only introducing the first movement: I. Barcarolle. The performers Dr. Susan Berdahl (flute), Dr. Xiaohu Zhou (bassoon), and Dr. James Moyer (marimba), all played outstandingly and show cased exactly how Chamber Music is meant to be played.…

However, I ended up choosing music review because I thought it would be the easiest and fastest. Little did I know how much I would learn from this assignment. Music affects people in a wide variety of ways, and it has done so for centuries. Different pieces leave different marks on their viewers sometimes a deeper, new found understanding of the world- either ripping off the rose-colored glasses or bringing light to the goodness of the world- and other times only leaving behind a handful of emotions or wisps of thought.…

This essay aims to examine to what extent should classical performers seek to recreate “authentic performances” of the past. Roger Norrington and the London Classical Players’ recordings of the Beethoven symphonies will be used as a case study to support the argument. Classical performers, are in this context, musicians who present a classical music performance. There is no defined boundary of what precisely is classical music, but classical music in this essay generally refers to art music with Western traditions. The music has a written musical tradition, and is composed with structural and theoretical considerations, and hence, has intention, where composers notate the exact notes, dynamics, instruments and performance directions etc.…
