Christianity and Islam Christianity and Islam, two of the most well-known and highly practiced religions in the world. While both faiths have significant differences, they also maintain some very surprising similarities. Most people do not compare the two due to the fact that media makes them sound like they can never have any major similarities. Both religions are monotheistic, meaning both believe in the oneness of God, but each religion worships God differently. In Islam, a set of rules are established, these are known as “the Five Pillars of Islam”. These rules seek to guide Man and keep Muslims on the “right path”. The word Islam in itself means “submission” in Arabic. This encompasses the ultimate Muslim goal perfectly as the main goal in Islam is to be able to fully submit to God. Muhammad (pbuh) is seen as the last prophet of Islam because the Holy Quran was revealed to him. The Holy Qur’an was not only seen as the book revealed to Muhammad but also as a guideline of sorts. Following this guide would ultimately lead to an enlightened and humble life. Unlike other holy books, the Holy Qur’an has not been changed since it was revealed. It is thought that the Qur’an has not been changed because the Holy Quran is the ultimate, perfect word of God, which does not need any changing. In Islam it is believed that “… There is no God but He, Most gracious, Most Merciful.” (Qur’an 2:163). This means all carriers of religious messages are only messengers (prophets), not to be mistaken as God(s). These messengers in Islam include, but are not limited to Muhammad (pbuh), Jesus (pbuh), and various other messengers. These people are seen as prophets and carriers of the message they were sent to give to their people. God is seen as one. He has no son, mother, or father. Although Islam does recognize Jesus and the bible, the interpretations are quite different. Because Christianity has been around for a relatively long period of time, it is known that it has developed various denominations. These include The Baptist Church, Catholicism, Presbyterianism, Greek Orthodox and so on. With different denominations came different interpretations of the Bible. These differing interpretations are seen in forms of the Bible such as the Old Testament, New Testament, and their different versions. Although there are significant difference between Christianity and Islam there are a few important similarities as well. One of the biggest similarities between them is the fact that both religions believe in the oneness of God. However, as established in the prior section, Islam does not recognize Jesus as a God. It has been understood that early Christianity did not recognize Jesus as God. As varying interpretations surfaced, Jesus was established as the son of God. One of the verses in the Bible that validifies this claim is seen in (John 17:3), “This is eternal life, so that you may know there is no true God, and Jesus Christ, who though has sent.” This further proves that both Islam and Christianity are not all that
