Chris Mccandless's Ambition In The Movie Waffle Street

Improved Essays
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once said, “Most people would succeed in small things if they were not troubled with great ambitions”. Ambition can cause people to do some crazy things like investing all of their savings in a franchise or traveling halfway across the world to meet their supposed long lost love.Sometimes these ambitions are worth the risk and hassle. But this strong ambition does not always guarantee a successful outcome. Having such an intense ambition for something can create nativity in a person or cause them to work too quickly and not achieve the entirety of their goal.
Although ambition, creates a strong drive for success, failure can come of it. Ambition creates a sense of control and power over one's life which everyone strives for. In the movie Waffle Street, directed by Eshom and Ian Nelms, the plot actively depicts this idea with a character named James Adams. James Adams loses his wall street job and decides to work at Papa’s Chicken and Waffles. After working there for about a week he acquires the determination to buy the location at which he works. But before he could buy the location a rich business owner came in and bought it (1). James’ life was brought to the ground, His ambition was too big for what he could accomplish. Despite him working his 1000 hours, and selling his house, and saving his money, he was still unable to achieve his goal of buying the location. Sometimes no matter how much effort and resources is put into a project, it does not repay itself in the end. Aaron Campbell writes a poem titled A Wishful Unfortunate Reality about this and expresses how no matter how much you “ work work work and give give give.” it might take forever to get anything in return (4). This poem is yet another example where even though a person gives everything they have and works their very hardest like James Adams, failures can still come from having a strong ambition. Although too strong of an ambition does not guarantee success, some component of the person’s goal maybe be accomplished along the way.

In Into the Wild Chris McCandless was able to live off the land in Alaska for a few months, but did not survive as long as he wanted to without dying of unknown causes (2). Chris Mccandless was full of wanderlust and his goal was to live in Alaska without any assistance or modern technology. He did a successful job for a while, but ended up being unprepared. Therefore despite his strong desire to fulfill his dream, he had only been able to accomplish part of it. Anne Fisher, author and writer for Fortune since 1996, put together an article about how success and ambition are really related. In this Article Fisher writes: “We discovered that ambition has, at most, only a very slight positive effect on life satisfaction, and actually a slightly negative impact on longevity,” (5). Although this is saying that ambition results in success, it also says that even though people were successful in life, they are not necessarily happy and their longevity may be less. This results in some life goals overall, like a long life, not being fulfilled. Just as not achieving goals can follow ambition, so can naivety. Chris McCandless is a strong example

Christopher Beha responded to the novel with a quote stating that the novel was about the impossibility of self-invention and the childness of a hope being delivered in adulthood that was once held in adolescence.…

Self-Determination Theory "Self-Determination theory (SDT) is an approach to human motivation and personality that uses traditional empirical methods while employing an organismic metatheory that highlights the importance of humans’ evolved inner resources for personality development and behavioral self-regulation"(Ryan & Deci, 2000, p. 68). Within this paper onee will discuss the correlation between SDT and motivation in relations to personal individual growth, and professional development. Determining Motivation "Self-determination theory suggests that there are different types of motivation, such that people vary not only in level of motivation but also in the source or quality of that motivation. At the same time, SDT postulates a continuum of autonomy to order those types of motivation" (Chemolli & Gagne, 2014, p. 575). Motivation is derived from the desire of the nature at hand; the interest of the specified subject, will determine the depth of the motivation.…
