Choreograph Your Classroom

Having smooth transitions are crucial to an elementary school classroom. When a class follows simple procedures like being quiet when going to carpet, or standing a certain way when lining up, can really make a tremendous impact on learning. Time will not be wasted on correcting behaviors when a class knows how to transition from one activity to the next. According to “Choreograph Your Classroom,” classroom management must be talked about with the children. They must know the expectations that their teacher has for them during everything that they do. Making transitions fun by singing or dancing will help flow from the carpet to the desks, to a group, to working individually. If there are “flows” set into place, children will not have

Doing clinical observations are very important because it gives a change to see student and teacher interactions first hand and get to see how well a student is responding. During my observations at Biddeford Intermediate School, I got the change to shadow an Ed. Teach in a life skills room. This was a great opportunity for me because it was a chance to see another kind of intervention done in the special education department. I have done many observations with an occupational therapist, and they have always been in lighting and very educational, but to visit a life skills room gave me more perspective on the special education department as a whole.…

In elementary school, students are typically in the same classroom for the entire day, with the same students, meaning there is no change of pace. Within these classrooms, it is virtually guarenteed that there will be students who have learning disabilities, are english language learners, or have some form of Attenion Deficit Disorder. This compounds the already exisitng liklihood that some students will grow bored and begin to become a disruption to the classroom setting. These disruptions come in the form of tapping, singing, fidgeting, and in some cases, temper tantrums, fits, and even…

The Philosophy of My Band Director When thinking about my band director in high school, I see her as an interventionist in Wolfgang and Glickman’s classroom management philosophy. Since my junior year of high school, I have observed my band director in her middle school band classes. Because her ensemble numbers have been growing rapidly, she has turned into an interventionist. She does not give the students much free time because they have the opportunity to get very loud and out of control. Her 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade band classes all consist of more than 60 students and just one teacher.…

I am currently student teaching in a 4th grade classroom at Sunset Elementary under my master teach, Alissa Nakaji. Upon my first day, I instantly fell in love with the dynamics of the classroom. The classroom had colorful posters explaining rules, consequences, inspirational quotes, and a list of roles for each student (changed weekly). This classroom feels more like a community of students striving together to have an optimal learning experience instead of just one teacher demanding and controlling the students. It is very autonomous and the teacher is involved only when needed.…

While observing in Beth Johnston’s First Grade classroom at Eugene Field Elementary School, I have noticed some effective and ineffective classroom management practices that she uses while I have been in the classroom. One effective classroom management technique that I have observed is that Mrs. Johnston puts her student’s desks into groups of three or four. This is an effective technique because she puts her strong students with her not as strong students, which can help with the students who might need a little help staying on track with the lesson that they are supposed to get done. Also, Mrs. Johnston has changed the groups a couple of times since I have been observing in the classroom. This I believe is effective because the students…

I believe that you have to explain the procedure you want to see, so that way the students know the reason why you want it done in that certain way. Then show and demonstrate the procedure so the student can see the way it should be done and eliminate any miscommunication. Then you will have to rehearse the procedure several times or remind them of it. For example, one of my procedure that will be the dismissal by teacher not by bell. I know that on the first week I will have to remind the class for the dismissal procedure a minute or two before the bell rings at the end of their class period.…

Setting: Our students are rising third graders (with a couple repeat third graders) and six students entered class in the morning. The video1 starts with me transitioning the students into the classroom through the threshold, and then transitioning the children to the carpet for Ms. Amat’s circle time. Mr. Aguila is primarily in charge of the morning transitioning, so we slightly adapted our normal morning routines so that I could facilitate the process. Mr. Aguilia is required by Gilmor to get the students from the cafeteria, but I took over the transition from the hallway. Since the first day, we have been using a threshold routine for our children in order to really set the expectation for the day and to prevent the children from storming…

While completing my walkthroughs for CED 100, I discovered many things about education and teaching that helped me on finalizing my decision to teach Middle School History. After completing all four hours in lower elementary education, upper elementary education, middle school education, and high school education, I had a very good understanding of how classes were conducted and how students from different age groups react to different forms of teaching. My first encounter in a classroom, at Model, was with Mrs. Noland’s lower elementary classroom. When I walked in, my first thought was, “chaos.”…

I volunteered at the Buckner-Aldine Family Hope Center for two and a half hours helping with a class called Jobs for Life. The purpose of the class is to help the adults taking it learn the skills necessary to become employable and succeed in the workforce. The class consisted of all women, mostly homemakers. Since this was the second time the class met, the main focus was reading through three chapters of the textbook for the class and creating a vision board.…

RAP 5.1 Rules, Rituals, and Routines As I watched a first grade teacher, I attempted to pay close attention to her class and how she taught them. The teacher succeeded to reach all of the positive classroom management skills and avoided several of the poor transitions. In most instances, the class moved smoothly from one project to the next. Transitioning from bigger activities like classroom time to PE went much better. When walking to the next activities, the teacher placed on of the more advanced and non-troublesome students in the back of the line, front of the line, and also next to the students that may act out.…

I believe that my calling on this Earth was to help children by becoming an Educator. Teachers are exceptional people that love and care for children, like they are their own. In life we gain knowledge and we must share that knowledge on to others. Education is a lifelong process and the most important part is learned in the early stages of life. Early Childhood Education should always provide enrichment in emotional, social, and academic skills to every child.…

Flinn’s classroom. Smooth transitions increase the time teachers are able to instruct and decrease the number of behavior management problems that occur. When I observed on Wednesday, Mrs. Flinn did a great job of preparing the students in advance for the transitions by giving them 5 and 10 minute warnings, signaling for student attention, bringing the activity to a close, telling the students exactly what needed to be done, prompting those off task, providing feedback, and beginning something new when everyone was ready. Also, I saw the importance of teaching functions (daily reviews/prerequisite checks, presentation of new content, guided practice, independent practice, and weekly/monthly reviews.) When students were doing math on Thursday morning, Mrs. Flinn began by doing a short review of the previous lesson.…

Every day in the classroom is a new day filled with learning and laughter. However, one of the only ways in which a teacher can create this kind of environment is by explaining and practicing routines and transitions with the students from the very first day of school. I believe that routines and transitions are very important because the students will know what to expect on a day to day basis. When the students know what to expect, it will allow them to feel more comfortable in the classroom. I am a very strong believer in both reenacting and explaining routines during the first couple of weeks.…
