In this book, the people choose their futures by their choices. Fate plays no role in your life. In this community of people their are 5 different factions. Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, Erudite, and Candor. In the beginning the main character, Beatrice is in the faction of Abnegation, living her life selflessly. Her mother and father, Natalie and Andrew Prior raised her and her brother, Caleb to forget themselves and only think of others. To Beatrice this was a challenge, but to Caleb it came easily. Then at the age of 16, the kids take a test, called the aptitude test. That test determines which faction you belong in.

They inject a serum that controls all the people of dauntless, except it doesn’t work on the Divergent people. The divergent people don’t agree with what the leaders are doing. So they try to stop them, they try to kill some of the leaders, but it doesn’t work out because they find out they are divergent. They then try to kill Tris but her mom comes and saves her, then Tris knows that she needs to save Abnegation and Dauntless. She finds her brother and father, and they go to the dauntless headquarters. Then they find the dauntless control room, but they found a serum that can control divergent people. They gave it to Four, so now he doesn’t know who Tris is. She tries and tries to get him to remember her and fight the serum. Finally he does and they now need to stop the dauntless from killing the Abnegation. The resolution is that four figures out how stop the serum and stops the dauntless from killing more Abnegation. But Four and Tris still believe that both factions, Abnegation and Dauntless and
