In the book ‘Chocolat’ a main theme that was looked at was the Church and Vianne and their outlook on each other, Reynaud the priest acts as the face of the church in the novel. Reynaud has a view on his people that accompany church that if “I poison the rats which infest the sacristy and gnaw at the vestments there. Should I not also poison the pigeons which disrupt my service?” (Pg89). This view on his people are that he poisons the river-gypsy so they will not come to town anymore but if I poison them why no poison my own subjects that disrupt me. This is a view on the people is a way of showing that he does not really care for the people in the town as they are nothing to him anyway. Reynaud knows all the wrong that happens in his town from Josephine stealing from people and musket beating her up, all the way to the people of the town breaking lent to go eat chocolate in Vianne’s chocolaterie. Reynaud pushes all the problems of the town aside as they are nothing because he does not care about
