Chinese Pottery: Pop Art Analysis

Chinese Pottery differs depending on the dynasty it was created in. When I was walking throughout the museum viewing all the different pieces of ceramics two pieces drew my eyes. The two pieces that I have chosen to write about are Bowl with Chrysanthemums and Bowl with children among vines. Both these pieces were done in China but at different points in time. Bowl with Chrysanthemums was done in China during the Ming dynasty which was the late 14th Century. Bowl with children among vines was done also in China but during the Northern Song Dynasty which was the 11th - 12th century.

Three dimensional objects usually contain a shape; a use of space is being taken up. There is some sort of value to the piece. There is texture that you are able to free in the piece along with lines. The lines in the piece are visible. There is also color that is put into the piece even if it is just one color. Bowl with Chrysanthemums contains the seven principles of design and the elements of design. The seven principles of design are emphasis, balance, repetition, contrast, unity and variety, directional force, and scale and proportion. “Emphasis is defined as an area or object within the artwork that draws attention and becomes a focal point.” (https://www.sophia.org/tutorials/design-in-art-emphasis-variety-and-unity) The area of emphasis is in between the two friezes or bands. The area of emphasis contains vines with leaves on them and big flowers blooming off of them. Balance is when the object is in equilibrium. This piece is nicely balances when it comes to design and shape. There is balance all the way around the bowl. Repetitions is when something is repeated over and over again. (http://www.metmuseum.org/collection/the-collection-online/search/42429) Bowl with Children Among Vines helps show the history of the Song Dynasty. In the Song Dynasty “At a time when several new pictures were coming into prominence, comparative absence of documentary paintings having a social theme - what we would call genre- is a measure of the extent to which artists were divorced from popular life.” (FOUNDATIONS OF CHINESE ART) Something that makes this piece ordinary is that “although early Yaozhou wares often had elegant light blue glazes, by the mid-tenth century most wares of this type were covered with olive-toned glazes. The reasons for the change remain obscure, though it may have resulted from the switch

“In fact we now know that the history of China dates back some 4,000 years, making it the world’s oldest surviving civilization” (Schomp, 5). According to the scholars to have a surviving civilization you need to have the following strong pillars: Warfare, Faith, Agriculture, Trading, Innovation and Politics/Economy. History shows Qin Shi Huangdi (born 259 BCE) known as the magnificent emperor, united the warring kingdoms of his country into 1 land in which he gave the name “China”. He ruled for 11 years (221-210) and made significant accomplishments during that short period of time, such as, building a country wide system of roads, having national currency, making a single standard writing style which created a foundation for all future Chinese…

On October 28, 2015 I attended the William Marcellous Lindgren Asian Art Collection Reception in the Miller Center occurring from 4-5 PM. This event displayed St. Cloud State’s large collection of Asian art such as paintings, sculptures, stone carvings, metalwork, decorative arts, and ceramics. All of these art pieces are from nine different countries, spanning many centuries. I learned that William Lindgren was a former professor here at St. Cloud State University, and he donated his collection of Asian art to SCSU upon his death. He collected all of this artwork from when he lived, worked, and traveled throughout Asia in the 1950s and 1960s for his work, resulting in an incredibly diverse collection.…

Katach (“form and design”) is the Japanese word that best translates the concept of “art”. A word which implies that “art is synonymous with living, functional purpose, and spiritual simplicity” (Walkup). Zen Art is by its nature spiritual as it was “done not by professional artists, but by Zen monks and nuns who spent extremely disciplined lives of meditation, in a search for enlightenment and awakening to the true nature of reality”(Sweet). The core foundation of the art-form is the belief that the true character as well as the level of spiritual realization of the monk or nun were transposed into the painting itself. The painting style employed in Katach was very quick and evocative, as its main focus was on the inherent nature of the aesthetic…

Chapter 6 in Ceramics A Potter’s Handbook by Glenn Nelson and Richard Burkett details the methods used in hand-building ceramic pieces. Beginning as an ancient practice, it is still used today despite the presence of the potter’s wheel to make sculptural and functional work. The first method is hand-building via pinching the clay. A few things to keep in mind when using this approach may be that small cracks may appear, but may be smoothed over while larger cracks are likely to reappear during firing.…

This piece of art that I have researched, will be writing about, and comparing to other pieces of art is the Jain Shrine. The country of origin that these shrines come from is India. Unfortunately we do not know of the artist that created any of the Jain Shrine’s in particular that are still preserved today. It is suggested that more than likely a wealthy individual from northwest India would have had this small shrine created for his own private Jainism religion purposes. Jainism is a religion of India which is older and was firmly established at the same time of the origin of Buddhism (Jain).…
