Child neglect is one type of child maltreatment (Australian Institute of Family Studies [AIFS], 2015). Neglect means that a parent or caregiver fail to provide a child (where they are in a position to do so) with the conditions that are culturally accepted in a society as being essential for their physical and emotional development and wellbeing (AIFS, 2015). The different sub-categories of neglectful behaviors are supervisory neglect, physical neglect, medical neglect, emotional neglect, educational neglect and abandonment (AIFS, 2015). According to National Quality Standard 2.3.4 if a child is suspect or identify at risk of abuse or neglect, educators are required to take action to respond to the situation (ACECQA, 2013).
Childcare educators and staff are mandatory reporters and they have reasonable grounds to suspect a child who is suffering from child neglect or is at risk of child neglect (Child Wellbeing and Child Protection-NSW Interagency Guidelines, 2006).
