These companies re responsible for exposing children to dangerous minerals without the proper clothing and materials. These companies are known for the popular technology they make, but Americans are enjoying these privileges at the life of another human being; a child. Children have to go through “narrow manmade tunnels risking permanent lung damage…” (AIC) to retrieve cobalt for technological devices. On another note, chocolate may often remind many Americans of sweet memories and fun times, but the manufacturing of chocolate is not sweet and evokes sadness for the children who work in the cocoa fields. Western African countries such as, Ghana and the Ivory Coast supply more than 70% of the world’s cocoa. Food Empowerment Project states that “The farms of Western Africa supply cocoa to international giants such as Hershey’s, Mars, and Nestlé—revealing the industry’s direct connection to the worst forms of child labor, human trafficking, and slavery”(food is power). Over the years journalists have been able to expose these corrupt actions, but now the cocoa industry has made it difficult for anyone to see what is happening on the farms. Food Empowerment Project also states that most children working on these farms are between the ages of 5 and 16. The great deals and bargains American consumers enjoy come from the life a human being. This modern day slavery can be brought to an end, if people would just take their blinders off. How could anyone say “All lives Matter” while wearing a graphic tee from Walmart that a child could have made for less than a dollar? Accepting the truth and unifying to take action would be a step in the right direction to free these people of the mistreatment they have been
