Portraying Chicana Feminists As La Malinche
Mirta Vidal mentioned in her article Women: New Voice of La Raza that “The impressive accomplishments of Chicanas in the last few months alone are a clear sign that Chicanas will not only play a leading role in fighting for the liberation of La Raza, but will also be consistent fighters against their own oppression as Chicanas, around their own specific demands and through their own Chcana organizations” (pg. 4). Chicanos wanted to be treated as their Anglo counterparts with showing their own language, history, race and culture. This struggle of representation their own pride made them to create Chicano Movement and to show that they raising their voices to get equality. So to get appropriate results they decided to create some organizations which will help them to eliminate inequality which exist among Anglos and Mexican Americans. Educational Issues Coordinating Committee, the United Mexican American Students and Movimineto Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan are the most important and main organizations which concentrated on educational system and improvement of the quality of education. These organizations focused on reforming educational system, helping Mexican Americans to get higher education and discussed the health care and police brutality toward Chicanos (Escobar, 1993). Also fundamental decision was the creation of Farmers Workers Labor Union by Cesar Chavez which provided safe working conditions and increased the wages of farm workers (Hammerback and Jensen, 1980). But we need to disclose main information to get the right “pattern.” As I mentioned previously Chavez was a person who created the United Farms Workers organization which contributed to the movement, and unite and changed some demands of farm workers. Because of his hard work we can notice the huge support that Chicanas’ get. Rodolfo Gonzales significantly contributed the movement with his rhetoric and united La Raza. Hammerback and Jensen examined the work of Gonzales and found out that he really helped Chicanos. Gonzales’ rhetoric techniques made him unique person and separated from others who supported Chicanos (Hammerback and Jensen, 1982).
