The Sainte-Chapelle is a royal medieval Gothic Chapel. The chapel was commissioned by Louis IX of France to hold his collection of Passion Relics. [1] The Sainte- Chapelle is one of the earliest surviving buildings of the Capetian royal palace and is considered a high achievement of the Rayonnante period of Gothic architecture. Disregarding the opposition of some of the architect Viollet-le-Duc, it was ultimately decided that the restorations would focus on and consider the different life stages of the Sainte-Chapelle rather than focusing on its primitive state. One of The changes made during the restoration was the spire designed during the 15th century. The staircase in the annex on the northern side was taken out and a new spire was built in its place in 1853. A great deal of decoration on the interior of the Sainte-Chapelle. Although investigations were made to retrieve previous decorations of the Sainte-Chapelle a large part of decoration is largely inventive from the restorers. Unlike the decorations though large portions of the restorations on the stained- glass windows were kept closer to the originals due to the amount of information known on these pieces. Another point of criticism of the restorations of the Sainte-Chapelle, it’s the restorations and renovations of the stained glass windows. Critics claimed that the restoration facilitates the loss, replacement, and destruction of the original stained glass windows. Though, there are many that condoned these restorations due to the fact of how particular Viollet-le-Duc was about keeping the stained glass windows of the Sainte-Chapelle as close to their original design and quality as possible.
