Chicago, for the visitors was known for a city without historical context in its architectural publicity. Other building and monuments around the Chicago only consisted modernism in their architecture but however, The Chicago tribune wanted something unique that held prehistoric architecture blended with cultural linkage of the New world and Old. The goal was to some how adapt the modern American building with the historical styles so the new generation can also appreciate the best of two eras. With the upper hand in new and better technology it made it easier for tribune to build such a monument when compared to European ways of building the structures. Tribune encouraged the use of historical styles; it didn’t copy the styles from other building in past but rather transformed prehistoric design to a new use. Tribune wanted to make sure that a legacy that they left behind would be celebrated. After forty-eight hours of debate, the choices came down to two designs after Holabird and Roche design was fixed as to be third prize winner due to outnumbered votes when compare to howell and hood’s and Sarinean’s model. Saarinen’s design, which was highly praised and admired by the jury, could have surely won an award on its own. Holabird and Roche’s entry had many fault and received critics from both Europe and America, which made it win third prize. There might have been an inside business involved in picking the winner but Howells and Hood’s entry was highly praised for its beauty. It was exactly what McCormick was looking for and this design fulfilled his dream of a beautiful Architecture that consisted prehistoric values blended with modernism and patriotism. The unfinished tower of Malines inspired the winning design after Howell took a trip to France. When compared Howells and hood’s project to Roche’s design, Howells and Hood’s design was much broader and taller than Roche’s design. Roche’s, the third place winner, project was an average looking building which compared to hoods and Howell’s project. The sense of patriotism and nationalism was not prominent as it was in the Howells and Hood’s design. Roche’s and Howells longitudinal exterior design was similar however, the top of these two designs was different. Roche’s structure from the top had embedded Iwan style arches on
