Chemical Synthesis is a process that starts with a simple structure, which then breaks and forms new bonds in order to create a new complex structure. …show more content…
The chemical synthesis is the one of the ways of breaking and creating bonds in order to make aspirin. A series of steps is used to break bonds and create bonds, which is called a mechanism. As shown in Equation 2, the mechanism of synthesis of aspirin is shown below.
Crystallization is used after a reaction is broken. Water is used due to the fact that recrystallization combines low temperature and hydrophobic effect. At the end of the reaction, the product is isolated by removing solvent by distillation and by extraction of the product.
An important way to distinguish the product in order to see if how much of the reactant was form to a product is to calculate the chemical yield of the product. The chemical yield of the product is reduced if product is lost while performing the reaction, a reaction did not go into completion, side-products are formed, etc. A high chemical yield is considering that a reaction went into completion while having a low chemical yield suggests that a mistake was …show more content…
The melting point range that is calculated for the aspirin will be compared to the given melting range of the pure product from the lab notebook. If both melting point are in the same range, the product made is determined to be pure. A pure acetylsalicylic acid will have a melting range of 134-136C.
Finally, an infrared spectrum will be recorded for the product. The infrared spectrum of the product will be compared with an infrared spectrum of a pure acetylsalicylic acid.
According to the methods described in the lab manual (INSERT LAB MANUAL CITATION HERE), 150 mg of salicylic acid was added into a test tube. Under the fume hood, 0.5 mL of acetic acid and one drop of 85% of phosphoric acid was added into the test tube. The test tube was added into a beaker that contained water at 45-50C for 20 minutes.
After 20 minutes, the test tube was removed and 1.5 mL of deionized water was added. The test tube was cooled to room temperature. While cooling, crystals started to form. To form more crystals, the test tube was placed in an ice bath for 15 minutes. The test tube was removed; 0.5 mL of cold water was added into the test tube in order to rinse out the solution into a Hirsch funnel for
