In the late 1940s, St. Paul, Minneota chemist and Jose Braquiel Calva invented the "chemical straightener", known as a hair relaxer today, has became very popular in the black communities over the years (Thompson 1). . Hair relaxers are designed to “glorify” and straighten the hair in a fast and easy process. Since the creation of hair relaxers, straight hair has been one of the many professional look African American women would go for. Dermatologist H Shetty, J Shetty and Nair confirms in their study that, "chemical hair relaxers have adverse effects a myth or reality". The dermatologist purpose of the study were to test female participants who consistently get "chemical hair relaxing" for side effects, one of the side effects was hair loss. The dermatologist did not give a specific number of participants, but the dermatologist specifies, 47% of the participant’s experienced hair loss after the process of getting a hair relaxer.
