Hedgehogs are by far, one of the ugliest sorts of creatures we take home as pets. Much like a rat, yet covered with long hair that makes them look spiked, hedgehogs are a bit more friendly and absolutely fat, often getting stuck on their large backs, flailing their short, stubby legs in every direction. It is no question that these animals are not attractive to look at. On the other hand, when seeing them play, popping their head out of your favorite coffee mug, or cuddled up in the tiniest of blankets, or wearing the holiday hats you dress them in without protest, they seem not very ugly at all, actually quite adorable and cute. Not only in hedgehogs, but in every aspect of life, there is something both beautiful and ugly to be found.…

The giraffe has the longest neck of all animals alive today. But the long neck of the giraffe must work with the circulatory system that brings blood to the brain. Since the brain of the giraffe is located so far away from the heart, the blood pressure the heart generates is approximately two times that of another animal with a similar weight. Due to the high blood pressure, the artery walls of the giraffe must be strong otherwise the giraffe would die of internal bleeding. The blood pressure, arterial wall strength and the length of the neck must all be in balance.…

Nearly all wild cheetahs are found in sub-Saharan Africa, where they roam freely upon the openness of the grassy savannah plains and forests. Although a small population has been found in northeastern Iran, only a few remain there. Cheetah’s while on the hunt will first use their exceptional eyesight to scan all of their surroundings before selecting its prey of choice. Upon spotting its prey they wait patiently, slowly creeping through the grasses until the time is right. Once the timing is perfect they sprint from cover and begin the chase that would end with the cheetah knocking its prey off its feet and killing it with a suffocating bite to the throat.…

Writing Assignment #1: Gorilla Growing up, there was one movie that was constantly in the DVR. That movie was Tarzan. Watching it often as I came home from daycare, it was one of the few films my parents bought for my brothers and I to watch. Much time has passed since then, and as I grew older, my perspective changed on what I once thought were noble beasts.…

The experiment in this research article concludes that there are six separate giraffe species each considered to be an evolutionary significant unit. The biological species definition states that a species is a member of a population that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring and in doing so are reproductively isolated. Of the six listed giraffe species (Giraffa peralta, Giraffa rothschildi,Giraffa reticulata, Girraffa tippelskirchi, Giraffa giraffa, Giraffa angolensis) and the 381 giraffes tested only three giraffes were found to be hybrid – resulting in relatively low gene flow between the species. Several other isolation factors are seen among giraffes that have led to their speciation including climate, habitat and behavioral changes.…
