This is my third year as a high school cheerleader. I am currently serving as the senior high cheer captain. Through the past three years of my high school career, cheer has continually impacted my life positively in more than one aspect. It has opened numerous doors for me. It has made me not only more physically active, but also more active in my school.…
As my second level 1 Fieldwork, I chose to volunteer for the Raleigh County Special Olympics Cheerleading team. There were four cheerleaders whose deficits ranged from Down syndrome, psychological, speech, low muscle tone, also across the autism spectrum. In which, Cheerleading enhances the following: attention span, comprehension, organization, sequencing, increased endurance, postural control, and increases social skills. Over a course of a month we gathered to participate in the learning of cheers and a competition dance. The support the athlete’s family had showed during practices and competition was influential to not only their child or family member but to me, as a volunteer and as an Occupational Therapy Assistant Student.…
All-Star cheerleading should be considered a sport. Cheerleading is one of the most physically demanding activities that's not considered a sport, but should be. “Cheerleading Championships is the most prestigious cheerleading in the country” (Varsity, 2018). Sideline, all-star and collegiate cheerleading teams all partake in championships. Championships are also different for each type of cheerleading, just like competitions. Walt Disney World Orlando Florida hosts this grand event every year. Qualifying to compete in Orlando Florida is the highlight for every cheerleader.…
I always felt like everyone had a special talent accept me. Some could paint, act, play sports, but that was never me. I was just a little girl being bullied for having a blanket and sucking my thumb in first grade. Always left out and being told I would never amount to much, took a big toll on my grades. All throughout elementary school I was in the “special” classes.…
Over 66 percent of girls high school injuries are accounted from cheerleading. Just like other sports, cheerleaders must go through concussion testing. Jeannie Bennitz, Lafayette cheer coach, says, “With the amount of training that they have to do and the level of activities that they do now, it really should be a sport.” Captain on the cheer team, Emily Fauver, expresses her feelings by saying, “We work just as hard as other sports do. We do a lot of conditioning and stuff; we lift humans.”…
Do you know someone who gets fired up when someone says that cheerleading is not as much of a sport as football? Well that’s because cheerleaders just want to be recognized as the athlete they truly are. Cheerleading has been overlooked as a sport for many years. People believed that cheerleaders have been just a support system for the real sports. Despite what people may think, cheerleading is just as much as a sport as football because it requires strength, coordination, and skill.…
Cheerleading has always been a very important aspect to my life. In high school our cheerleading squad had an experience that proved cheerleaders do not get the respect from other athletes that they deserve. As a cheerleading squad, we were at every football and basketball game, even the away games. We were there to show support for our fellow athletes, however when our squad was in a cheerleading competition, not one of the other athletes came in support of us. This showed the lack of respect other athletes had for our cheerleading squad.…

Ever since I was six years old cheering on my local Pop Warner team, I have dedicated an unwavering amount of time and dedication to my beloved sport. Whether it’s staying at school until six o’clock every day or spending my weekends making choreography for my team, cheer affects my life inside and outside of school. The life lessons and qualities I’ve developed through cheer are traits that I can utilize for the rest of my life. Most notably, cheer has taught me the value of hard work. My team at Kennedy High School has competed in 3 competitions through Sharp Internationals and Jamz Cheer and Dance.…
The fourth grade through sixth grade session was from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The high school cheerleaders taught the girls a dance, two cheers, and the school song. These girls also were able to learn how to stunt. The fifth and sixth grade girls loved to stunt with their peers. The girls enjoyed a break with cookies donated from Subway.…
“No, Dance; No Cheer.” Those words rang in my head non-stop I thought about what done to my foot the night before. The doctor told me that it could be for 6 weeks or career ending. That was not what I had wanted to hear, especially after all the hard work and time I had put into dancing since I was three and cheer for the past couple of years.…
Being a gymnast was not only about making flips and turns it was something more than that. It came with its challenges, but it was something unforgettable. Having been a competitive gymnast for ten years not only showed me how to be a part of a team, but it showed me something greater which is work ethic. When I was in gymnastics I learned that you will have to work with people that you necessarily do not get along with. You sometimes will have to be a part of a team and you may not like someone in it.…

Have you have been led by a person who believes that they’re better than you? Or have you been excluded simply because of your last name? Anyone who has ever tried out for cheerleading will probably answer yes to both of these questions. I have been a cheerleader at my school for six years and I’ve been on both junior varsity and varsity squads, but even I can’t escape the “name game” or the hypocritical girls who believe that it’s their job to boss the underclassmen around. Even though the seniors and coaches are an integral part of the problem, they aren’t the cause.…
