Cheaper by the Dozen, made in the 1950s and in the 2000s, exemplifies how the different functions of the family are served. Although there are different ages of the kids in each movie which alters what teenage challenges are displayed. For example, in the Cheaper by the Dozen in the 1950s, the teenage problems were centralized around the eldest daughter. The eldest daughter going to prom, looking at guys, and finding her social identity. In many cases she overcomes her obstacles. In one case, she defied Mr. Gilbreth and cut her hair short. She wore heels and showed more skin. In the Cheaper by the Dozen in the 2000s, Nora the eldest Baker wants to leave her family, since she is a young adult and start a new life with her boyfriend. Nevertheless, she cannot do that because the family always seems to need her. Furthermore, Charlie and Lorraine are harassed at school because people think that they are “country hicks” because of the fact that there are twelve siblings in total. Both parents are working so there is no one at home to stay with the children unlike the 1950s version. Furthermore, after Mrs. Baker leaves to go on her book tour, Mr. Baker has to work and watch the children and for most of the movie he focuses on his work rather than the children. The Baker children listened to their Dad less and one even ran away when he was not getting enough attention from his parents.
