In the short story Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes a character by the name of Charlie Gordon has an operation to increase his IQ. All the time, Charlie gets picked on by everyone, but doesn’t know it; he has a form of mental retardation that inhibits his ability to learn, spell and remember facts and information. Even though Charlie gets the operation, does it really help him out in the long run?

Charlie was disliked for being absent minded before the operation and being a bit dull, but even after the operation he was still disliked. A week or two after the operation “Mr. Donnagean showed me the petition. 840 names…” The petition was made to Charlie fired or make him quit.
