Charles (John Huffam) Dickens was born on February 7, 1812 in Portsmouth, United Kingdom ("Charles (John Huffam) Dickens." DISCovering Authors). Dickens had an overall harsh childhood with his father (John Dickens) constantly being sent to debtors prison for living beyond his means ("Charles (John Huffam) Dickens." DISCovering Authors). Since his father was imprisoned and his mother lived with her husband in prison, Dickens was forced to live in poverty and hunger in a rented room ("Charles (John Huffam) Dickens." DISCovering Authors). While living in this room he met many people who would later inspire many of the characters in his books ("Charles (John Huffam) Dickens." DISCovering Authors). This humiliated Dickens and as an adult was rarely able to speak of it. Afterwards Dickens was forced to find work where he could, working at factories for meager wages, later he was able to find a decent job as a court reporter ("Charles (John Huffam) Dickens." These jobs, life experiences of being a court reporter, and his fathers humiliation were what inspired Dickens to take up journalism and a liking to politics ("Charles (John Huffam) Dickens."
