Although Darwin is called the "Father of evolution," he never really wanted to be a leader. He was a passionate naturalist who spent years in research that led to the controversial Theory of Natural Selection. Reluctant to publish his theory, it took more than 20 years and support from fellow scientists for Darwin to finally publish On the Origin of species in 1858. The book was an immediate best seller and it made Darwin a leader in a revolution of science that is still controversial today.

Darwin was the child of a wealthy family who loved to explore nature. He also came from a long line of Scientists. His father, Dr. Robert W. Darwin, was a medical doctor. His grandfather, Dr. Erasmus Darwin, was a botanist. Darwin wasn't a particularly bright student starting out, in his autobiography he wrote: ‘Nothing could have been worse for the development of my mind… the school as a means of education to me was simply a blank’. He never showed signs of scientific genius from his elders, he instead spent his childhood days not focusing on education or his future, but collecting rocks and beetles, and doing other recreational activities. The eight-year-old Charles already had his taste for natural history and collecting when he joined the day school run by its preacher in 1817.
