Charles Darwin Research Paper

Ever since man became self-aware he has wondered how he came into being. As years passed, many philosophers suggested theories, oscillating between superstition and truth, with some theories becoming more popular than others. Charles Darwin, a British naturalist, recorded perhaps the most popular theory—evolution. Believers of this theory declare that the earth is incredibly old, and that life arose from nothing; eventually, man evolved from apes, essentially a glorified animal. As unbelievable as this theory sounds, it surprisingly gained much attention and is widely accepted even today. Because evolution is taught as “science,” many view the truth of Creation as a religious fantasy that is not scientific. However, tracing the roots of evolution back to Charles Darwin reveals much about the idea. In the year 1831 Darwin embarked on a five-year voyage on the H.M.S. Beagle as part of an expedition to the surrounding areas of South America and islands in the Pacific. During this journey he observed many new animals, geological formations, and plants, all the while taking copious notes and keeping in mind the idea of uniformitarianism (the present is the key to the past). He published his book The Origin of Species in 1859, detailing his theories concerning the origin of life in respect to the things he had observed throughout his voyage. It is interesting to note that this book was published more than twenty years after his trip and simply included his speculations about how the earth came to be. Natural selection is the idea that the healthiest and strongest of each species have a better chance of survival than their weaker counterparts: survival of the fittest. While this idea is true to some degree, Darwin greatly misunderstood the concept. He ignored the fact that variety within kinds has established limits that cannot be surpassed; for example, reptiles exhibit much variety within their kind, but it is impossible that a reptile be transformed into a bird. This is true because natural selection acts to maintain the survival of already existing species, not create new ones.
