Charge Nurse Reflection

During my second week of clinicals I followed the charge nurse before starting my shift in the Infusion center. The charge nurse begins her day by assigning the nursing staff, orientees, nursing students and assisted personnel (AP). She stated that she assigns the nurses and assisted personnel according to the patient’s needs. She proceeded by stating that she determines the patients’ needs, whether they are “C.N.A. busy or nurse busy”. This means that either, patients need help mainly with ADL’s or administering many medications (antibiotics, pain meds’ etc.) or other critical care. While following her, I noticed her speaking with the other student nurses if any of them spoke Spanish so she may accommodate those patients with someone who …show more content…
The supervisors have to take in consideration the client’s factors, and health care team factors when making assignments. Such as, condition of the client, the level of care needed and experience with similar clients. As well as staff familiarity with the unit. As for delegating and supervising there are certain protocols a nurse needs to follow. There are five important rights of delegation which are; right task, right circumstance, right person, right direction/communication and right supervision/evaluation (Henry et al. 2016 p. 7-9). I believe the nurse encompassed all of these rights and protocol when assigning, delegating and supervising. For example, the orientees were not familiar with the unit therefore, were closely supervised by the more experienced RN’s. Also, she delegated myself to educate a patient on how to prevent pneumonia, but delegated the C.N.A. to obtain an oncology patient’s vital signs. By supervising she made sure the tasks were done, not only the charge nurse, but the RN’s in charge of their own patients and AP.
