Many people today believe that all senior citizens are grouchy, reclusive, and lonely. Senior citizens are mostly looked at as grouchy and mean because of tv shows and movies. There is always a role in a movie with the grouchy old grandpa that yells at every kid to get off of his lawn. Or the mean old lady that lives alone in a big scary house that all the neighbors are scared to go to. People being scared of the elderly is why they are also viewed as reclusive. The mean outward appearance some people see is the reason why the elderly seem like they avoiding company. Another reason is because some are seclusive and sheltered. Elders are also viewed as lonely because when some are unable to take care of themselves, the next step is a nursing home. Nursing homes are seen as a sad environment to people. People assume that elders being in a nursing home no one comes to visit them and if someone does it is only once a month, if even that. The limited mobility, lack of transportation, and loss of spouse could also lead people to believe that elders are lonely.
