Chara is six years old. During her play at a playground right outside the Centre, she was involved in Functional play/Practice play, Constructive play and Dramatic play, and Games with rules. Types of play were developed by Piaget, which was later on adapted by Smilansky.
Functional play/Practice play When children are engaged in functional play, they practice repetitive movements of new motor skills acquired (Cite). There are two different types of motor skills. Fine motor skills involve fine tuning small muscle movements such as grasping. Gross motor skills involve larger movements of the body such as jumping (Cite). Over time these skills slowly develop into more complex movements (Playgrounds Build, 2015). Therefore, she is able to learn how to ride a tricycle as her motor skills develop into more complex forms.
Chara rode on a tricycle beside Dillan who drove a car. However, Chara said that she was mountain cycler cycling, while Dillan said that he was a firefighter driving fire truck. This shows that she was involved in associative play as a social type of play. Associative play occurs when children play in the same space sharing same resources for a short interaction. Both of them were playing in the same area using the different equipment provided, yet they were not playing together in the same theme or setting. Therefore it is considered as associative
