The Outsiders is the story of two gangs, the Greasers and the Socs, that despise each other. Throughout the story, the Greasers learn the importance of sticking together all of the time. The Greasers strong friendship is shown when Johnny follows Ponyboy into the church fire, Dally helps Johnny and Ponyboy hide after committing murder, and when Ponyboy follows Johnny even though he didn't have any part of the murdering.
The character Johnny stands by Ponyboy while trying to save little children in a burning church. “‘Hey Ponyboy.’” “I looked around, startled. I hadn’t realized Johnny had been right behind me the whole way.” (pg.91-92) This example shows that even through hard times, Greasers always stick together. The act of Johnny following Ponyboy into a burning church, even though he is frightened, shows pure friendship.

What are we gonna do?’ (pg.56-57) Ponyboy could have told Johnny he had no part in the murdering, and went home, but didn’t even think about that option. Ponyboy and Johnny’s devoted friendship is displayed when Pony supports Johnny through the crime he committed.
In the dramatic story, The Outsiders, a group of guys called the Greasers are always somehow battling the Socs.
