In the beginning of the book, Claire was against Jenna attending school, and told her that, "'[...] school [was] out of the question,'" (Pearson, 40). After sleeping on it, she ended up allowing Jenna go to school. Although, Claire opposing Jenna's desire to go to school shows that her parents were fearful of people finding out about her existence and legality. With people knowing about her situation, Jenna's parents were terrified that she would be turned in to the authorities and seized from them. They were also afraid of Jenna getting harmed by the school atmosphere, and that her lack, and abundance, of memories and information would make it obvious that there was something off about her. Jenna's parents also took the precaution to create an, "'[...] escape plan in case the authorities caught up with them. So while [her] parents provided subterfuge, [Lily] whisk[s] [Jenna off] to Edward [(also known as Clayton Bender)], who will in turn will help whisk both of [them] out of the country. The choice was Italy, since they don't have the same restrictive laws as [the United States] and the climate would work well for [her],'" (Pearson, 188).
