In the short story “Penny in the Dust” depicts a father that is seen an intimidating man, however he is often misunderstood. The story takes place in a rural area in which the main source of income came from farming. Wanting to support his family everyday the father worked hard on the farm so that he could make an income. Methodical is one characteristics shown in the father. He “worked all day long” and had a very set schedule. Because of his methodical ways the father appeared like “he was distant” from everyone. The distance he created led to him being misunderstood by Dan. Showing little interest about those around him, he seemed like he was insensitive and intimidating.
