Officer Ryans Crash and Redemption
The movie Crash was released in 2005 and was directed by Paul Haggis. The film is set in Los Angeles and takes place within a 24 hour period. One character from the movie is Officer Ryan. Officer Ryan is middle-aged, handsome, white, tall and has a self-assuredness about him. Officer Ryan is a symbolic, conceited, and also racist character, representing the typical white American man in the movie. Many characters in the film have their prejudices and stereotypes. Officer Ryan is just one who will experience self-reflection, change, and redemption.
Officer Ryan is a police officer in Los Angeles who has been on the force for seventeen years and during those seventeen years, he has been taking advantage of other races. He is the American man and police officer who is extremely racist to other races and believes he is superior. Throughout the movie, he shows his disgust and condemnation of other races by looking down on them and taking advantage of them, such as with Christine and Shaniqua. Officer Ryan and his partner Officer Hanson arrive at a scene of a crash. Officer Ryan shows reaction and shock when he stares into the eyes of the same woman he molested in the car accident. As a policeman, he enters the car that is flipped upside down and finds a woman stuck in the car. He tries to help her but once they made eye contact, the woman, Christine, rejects his help and screams, “Not you! Anyone but you!.” Even in a life or death situation, Christine is deeply scared by Officer Ryan, and she refuses his help, regardless of the fact that she could die. Officer Ryan is surprised by her reaction and guilt pours over him. He shows a transformation by throwing away his pride, power, and racist behaviors and immediately attempts to save her
