Secondly when all the boys have met up on the beach; they establish a few rules. Then they have a vote to decide the leader of the group. The two candidates are Jack and Ralph. Ralph wins the vote, because the smaller kids and the choir looked up to him. Ralph also seemed like a good leader that would take the right decisions at the right times.

Also at the start of the book, Jack doesn’t have that much power but gradually he starts to gain more and more until he is the most powerful child on the whole island. He is a key character.
Piggy:
Piggy is the second character that we encounter in the book. He is a small and fat boy with glasses. He doesn’t play as big of a role as Ralph and Jack but he is still an important character. He is Ralph’s bestfriend on the island and always sticks close to him. Wherever Ralph went Piggy went the same.
He was always thinking on the positive side of things. Whenever Ralph was feeling down he would cheer him up. Piggy also plays a huge part where they need fire, because none of the boys know how to light the fire but then Ralph uses Piggy’s glasses to light the fire. So without Piggy there would be no fire. Then one night the hunters steal Piggy’s glasses because they need fire. So when Piggy and Ralph go to get his glasses back, Jack refuses to give them
