Chapter 8A & 8B Summary
The South Asian Realm South Asia may be the most diverse realm in the world. Mountains, deserts, and the Indian Ocean are some the features that mark this realm. Another feature of this realm is the great rivers, especially the Ganges that has for many years supported the clustered population in this realm. India was the birthplace of major religions that impacted this realm. Religions like Hinduism and Buddhism originated in India. Foreign influences came to the South Asian realm through a narrow passage in the northwest called the Khyber Pass. This realm contains 24 % of the world’s human population. In the west lies the Indus River, which crosses Kashmir and then moves south to Punjab from which it receives its major tributaries. Since many of these rivers originate from the Himalayas there is a rising concern about the melting of the glaciers and the effects of global warming. In a way the melting of the glaciers will generate more water for these rivers but as the glaciers shrink the melting will decrease. India is a plateau country, that is strongly dominated by the massive Deccan, which are sheets of lava that were poured out during the breakup of Pangaea. Many civilization have emerged in this region, the first civilization emerged in the Indus Valley. This civilization was characterized by being the most complex and advanced technologically. This civilization emerged along the same time period of the Bronze Age when many other civilizations were emerging in Mesopotamia and Egypt. The main cities for this civilization were Harappa and Mohenjo- Daro. Within this civilization existed hundreds of smaller settlements and the people within this civilization used different labels for their state, it was called Sindhu, Indus and India. The second civilization that emerged in this realm are the Aryans. The Aryans are Indo Europeans who invaded India. What this civilization produced to this realm is amazing. Aryans started the process of integrating the isolated tribes into organized systems and Aryans made a great comeback for urbanization. The Aryans also produced different religious beliefs into this realm like Vedism and Hinduism. With Aryans came social stratification. With the introduction of city states within this civilization came a caste system of Hinduism, which was just a way to justify the structural inequality. Buddhism emerged in the eastern Ganges
