Desperate to prove his wife’s innocence, Giles tries to convince Judge Hathorne, Deputy Governor Danforth, Ezekiel Cheever, and Parris by saying how they have six hundred acres of land to tend to, as well as the court is holding his wife by mistake. He goes as far as to say that Hale, who came to Salem to investigate further, never once accused her of…

In all of acts, Chapter 5 really stood out to me because it shows that God can use the worst situations for good purposes. The first part of this chapter talks about Ananias and Saphirra. When you sell a piece of property, you’re supposed to give ALL the money to the apostles, so that they could use it to benefit God’s kingdom. Instead, Ananias kept part of the money for himself. This shows that he had a lack of faith that God would provide for his needs.…

Nicholas Hytner may have chosen to open the film with the scene of Tituba and the girls dancing in the forest to provide context for the coming events in the story. By showing this scene, the audience can infer that Betty decides to fake her illness in order to evade punishment from her father, Reverend Parris, who walks in on the girls’ nighttime activity in the forest. This opening scene also provides a clue about Abigail’s infatuation with John Proctor, since the other girls in the scene make requests concerning boys to Tituba, and also say to her, “Get her [Abigail] John Proctor, Tituba!”. Additionally, the inclusion of this scene in the movie provides a visual for proof of later references, such as when whether Parris saw someone naked…
