Chapter 5 - America and Free Trade is mainly about Thomas Friedman, the author of this book, giving two sides to David Ricardo’s arguments on free trade. David Ricardo came up with a concept that there could be a gain in trade if every country specialized in a certain item then traded with other countries. At first Friedman was uncertain about free trade being a good thing between nations because he was afraid Americans were losing their jobs to all of the foreigners. After doing more research and thinking about it more, Friedman came to an agreement with Ricardo’s statement and now believes that free trade is the way to go. The first Skill is Which Class Do I Take to Learn How to Learn? and this is all about learning. For this skill, you have to have a passion for learning, so you can actually enjoy what you are being taught and put it to good use. You might not like every class you have to take, but if you like learning then you can still pay attention and use the skills you learn. Navigation is the next skill and this is about being able to tell what is real and what is fake from different sources. The biggest source that can be hard to navigate from for some people is the Internet. Almost everyone these days have access to the internet and will google a question when they have it, but don’t check different websites to see if it is even correct. A big thing in today’s world is the news and everyone believes every single thing that they hear. The next skill is Passion and Curiosity and this is basically about having passion and having to be curious to get a better education with certain things. The equation for this skill is CQ+PQ>IQ because being curious and passionate is better than having a higher IQ. Having a high IQ is great, but when you are passionate and curious about something, that makes you never want to stop learning and will lead to a higher IQ. The fourth skill is Stressing Liberal Arts, which is about how people should be taking and enjoying more of the liberal art classes because one day that could be the only jobs available to us. Also, you could find your passion through liberal art classes, like how Steve jobs found his living with one liberal art class, instead of any of his college classes he had to take. The last skill mentioned in this chapter is Right Brain. This skill is about having to be creative so when we are older there will still be jobs available to us that technology cannot take over.
