Hanna cupped Sam’s chin in her hand and shook her head, “No, Sam, we are not getting back together. But I have made a decision so go get your sisters.”

Pete, not much better at choosing a car than Molly, purchased a car with a defective transmission that could go no faster than 35 miles per hour. Cars sped past, honking their horns, yelling at Pete to get out of the way. Keeping his cool, Pete delivered Kate, Millie, Susan, Sam, and Beth safely to their grandparents.
Christmas came early that year as they ate the traditional ham dinner with all the trimmings. Her grandparents and aunts and uncles had never been evicted or humiliated as neighbors watched their belongings thrown out the window; they never went through cancer; they never went through divorce; they never ran out of food; they all had jobs; and they didn’t have to move across the entire United States, leaving a sister behind.
