While doing research on a few articles on corruption, I have come across police corruption and decided to talk about this specific article I have pulled up. First, I want to explain what Police Corruption is. Police corruption is a form of police misconduct in which law enforcement officers break their social contract and abuse their power for personal or department gain. This type of corruption can involve only one officer, or it can involve a group of officers in a coordinated effort. In a matter of two years there were heavy surveillance with the Philadelphia Law Enforcement Agency. Federal officials have been watching this department and specifically watching six officers that are said to be committing corrupt offenses while being on duty. Through the years of 2006 and 2012, it was said that there were corrupt cops that worked in the Philadelphia Agency, and they allegedly were beating up the suspects that were apprehended and said to have stolen 500,000 worth of drugs amongst other things. All six of the officers that were arrested were specialized narcotics officers who worked for the agency. Federal agents said that these officers apprehended the suspects they were after and took their drugs and money, and turned it to their own and started selling it to make profit of their own. It is said to be one of the worst things to happen and a disgrace to the Philadelphia Police Department. The chief of Police of that department says that he has never seen anything like it out of the forty years he has been there. There has been many lawsuits due to these alleged crimes, and many suspects
