Beginning in the twentieth century, American lives would drastically change with the impact of the railroad, telegraph and telephone which transformed the idea of time and space, as well as affected the creation of new organizations. Roosevelt became president during this time of change, termed Progressive Era, and gave government a larger role in the lives of the American public. During this time, racial issues were not of utmost importance. Southern white progressives enacted discriminatory laws and most white Americans held the belief that African Americans were not needed in democracy. Many progressive organizations reflected the middle and upper class’s interests such as prohibition, a businesslike government, and greater reliance on experts. Progressivism played an active role in all levels of government as people wanted change in the basic structure and function of government to make it more responsive to the city dweller’s concerns.
